The most important aspect of your Etsy listing is tags and titles. It is also one of the hardest parts of Etsy to master. But there isn’t a massive amount of information available that tells you what to do. Here is my guide to how I come up with them and how to populate them.
To do:
- Titles should be separated using commas. When Etsy searches for items it looks for titles that make sense. If you use slashes or dashes to separate, Etsy doesn’t find this very easy to read. As a result your item will not feature very highly in search results.
- Use all the spaces. There are 140 available characters for a title on Etsy. Try and fill your title by using as many of the characters as you can.
- Your titles and tags should match. The better that they match, the higher up in search results your items will appear. A little shortcut for this, is if you write your title first and use commas between the phrases, you can copy and paste into the tags box. This will automatically populate the tags for you.
- Use all 13 tags. Each tag is a search term that a potential customer will use to look for your item. Make sure you use all 13 to widen the search scope.
- Don’t repeat words. You don’t need to waste your characters by repeating words. If you have wedding in the phrase somewhere, use the characters for an associated word, rather than repetition. This too will allow you to widen the search scope.
- Vary from other products. If you list more than one item that is the same (with a slight variant) make sure your tags and titles are different. This could be as simple as using the same words but just in a different order. If your listings all match, they will fight against each other to be seen. and as a result they will suffer and not be seen.
What to use
- Product description. What your item is, remember to be concise. Describe what it is in simple short phrases. For example, baby’s 1st Christmas decoration. It is important to note that everybody may use different terminology. For example some people might use decoration but others may use ornament. Including both variants will help to widen the search scope.
- Product uses. Try to think about why someone might be purchasing your item. For example a gift for a couple could be given as an engagement, wedding or anniversary present.
- Related themes. If the item can have multiple purposes, including all appropriate words will help to widen the search scope.
-
Etsy search autocomplete. To make sure that your items are relevant to what customers are searching for on Etsy, you will need to do a check to see what terms are being used. Start to type in a word in Etsy search bar and below a list of all the related searches will appear. See if any of these phrases would relate to your item and add it to the tags and title.
- Competitor tags. To see if there are any areas that you are missing or if you are giving yourself the best standing for being found. It is a good idea to research what tags your competitors use. For example if you have a tea cosy find a high ranking tea cosy on
Etsy. Scroll to the “Related items” at the bottom and in the grey boxes you will see what tags they are using. You should compare these to the ones that you have selected. Don’t make them the same though as your listings will conflict.
These are the pointers that I use when listing my items on Etsy. Pleases let me know if they have been useful to you or if there are any other tips that you use.
