I thought I would treat my very overworked phone to a new phone case. To try and protect it from the abuse and numerous drops that it is subjected to on a daily basis. However I found that there were not many options open to me for my particular make and model of phone. Therefore I was left little option but to come up with a handmade cover.
Sitting in the shop I came up with my design after looking at a soft glasses case. The design would be very similar although would have different dimensions to fit a phone.
Step 1: Pick your phone cover fabrics
First up you need to pick your fabrics for the cover. I absolutely love denim. Its hard wearing and great at not falling prey to sticky finger marks left by little monsters. At the same time I have quite an alliance with pink at the moment. Having two sons, pink seems to act like a protective barrier around anything that I don’t want them to touch. Therefore I decided on a
denim case with a pink lining and possibly some pink applique.
I am awful at being neat when I get a new idea. Many would cringe at my gap-hazard approach to pattern cutting. So you may want to avert your eyes at certain points through this tutorial.
Step 2: Cutting out the phone cover
Start with the outer cover fabric, lay your phone on the fabric with the top of
your phone close to the edge. Then draw around the other three sides of your phone, leaving a border the thickness of your thumb all the way around. Cut this rectangle out and use it to cut an identical rectangle in the same fabric.
You will then use these two pieces of rectangle fabric to cut the same sized pieces from the fabric you would like to use inside your cover. You will then also use these as a template to cut the wadding for your cover, I didn’t have any wadding, and as usual was impatient to finish this project so, I used some polar fleece that I had left over after making some stockings.
Now you should have two rectangles of outer fabric (in my case denim), two pieces of lining fabric (which was pink for mine) and two pieces of wedding (I’d used fleece for this). This is the basics of your cover ready.
Step 3: Add detail to your phone cover
If you want to add an applique to your cover you will start by sewing this into the front side of one of your outer cover fabrics. I decided on a simple heart in the lining fabric so I sewed this onto the denim before I started constructing the cover. Here you could let your imagination run wild and add any design of your choosing.
Step 4: Sewing the edges
The lining is then stitched to the top edge of the denim, the good sides of the denim and lining fabric need to be facing each other. This will later be turned inside out so the good side of the lining fabric will become the inside of the case.
The majority of the sewing is then done which will then create the case. Layer the interfacing against the wrong side of the denim so you will have a pile consisting of interfacing, denim, denim again then interfacing. The lining fabric should be unfolded from the denim and should lay above the denim and interfacing pile. You are then going to sew from the top right corner of the interfacing down the entire right hand side. Next sew along the bottom of the denim, interfacing stack and up the left side of the entire length.
Step 5: turning out your phone cover
You should now have a long sausage with the lining fabric at the top and the denim pile at the bottom. You now need to turn the case inside out, you can use the opening at the top of the lining fabric to do this. Once turned in the right way, you will need to sew along the opening you have just used to seal the cover. Push the lining fabric down inside the case so you are left with just the denim case.
Step 6: Final details
I tied a ribbon around the top of the cover to give it a bit more detail. I then secured the now with a few hand stitches through the bow and ribbon ends.
Hopefully you have found this very basic walk through of how to make your own phone cover helpful. I would love to see what designs you have used on your own cases. Let me know if there is anything that you need added to the tutorial. Good luck recreating a cover of your own.
