We redecorated the children’s room with an avengers theme and I was looking for some inspiration for a blank wall area.  Boy’s rooms can be really difficult to decorate without making it looked childish or easily dated. Decoupage letters were the answer!

For each of the children when they were born I bought them their names in 15cm freestanding MDF letters.  Originally I had spray painted them silver however wasn’t completely happy with the finish.  In addition I didn’t feel like they really matched the children’s bedroom decor. Using wrapping paper to renovate the letters came to me after wrapping presents for a birthday party.

Step 1 – MDF Letters

Purchase MDF letters for your desired name or word.  For versatility I would suggest the freestanding version of the letters.  That way they can either be attached to the wall or sat on top of a bookcase or windowsill. Here is the type of letters that I used for my project https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Free-Standing-Wooden-MDF-Letters-18mm-Thick-4-Heights-Avaiable/261235174760?hash=item3cd2d46d68:m:mRHQPV2XoWYMe8kbAmYVt8w&redirect=mobile

Then you are ready to create your decoupage letters.

Step 2 – Paint letters

Next I would paint the letters in a complimentary colour to your wrapping paper or existing room decor.  I chose blue and red to match the colours common in avengers imagery.   Cover the letters all over in a minimum of two coats of paint.  I find that the tester emulsion pots you can pick up from any hardware shop are the best paint for covering MDF and are relatively cheap to buy.

Step 3 – Select wrapping paper

Find a wrapping paper that would compliment the decor in the room you will be displaying the letters in.  Ideally your print shouldn’t be too large or too small, as you want a reasonable amount of the design to show across the thickness of the letters.  I used wrapping paper however wall paper or napkins could also be used.  Cut the wrapping paper into rectangular shapes slightly larger than the letters.

Step 4 – Mod Podge fronts

Cover the front side of your letters in a generous layer of mod podge. Once  covered place the letter face down on the back of the wrapping paper.  Turn over and very gently smooth any bubbles or wrinkles in the paper.  Leave the letters to dry.

Step 5 – Cut letters

Use a very sharp craft knife on a self sealing mat to cut the excess.  Place the letter face down on the cutting mat and run the knife along the edge of the letter being careful not to rip the paper.

Step 6 – Seal letters

Seal the letters by covering all sides with a layer of mod podge.  This will ensure that the paper will be fully stuck to the letters.  Leave to dry for 24 hours to prevent sticking to surfaces. Now your decoupage letters are finished.

Step 7 – Display your decoupage letters

Now the letters are finished you can decide how you would like to display them.  Standing on a worktop, bookcase or windowsill can be a nice feature.  Alternatively they make a lovely addition to a blank wall.  I chose to add them to the wall.  I used a glue gun to attach them to a single length of wood.  This made them easier to hang.

I hope you have found some inspiration from this how to guide.  So many designs can be use it match decor.  Also so many objects can be decorated using the decoupage method of wrapping paper and mod podge.  I have seen door knobs, furniture and trinket boxes all covered using this method.  Your imagination is your only limit.
