Get ready to make your very own DIY Valentines Card
It isn’t that long until Valentine’s Day and I thought I would share with you a really simple but striking DIY Valentines card that you can make yourself at home. The design that I have created uses very simple crochet techniques however you could achieve a similar card using other methods.
To make your DIY Valentines Card you will need:
Plain card either white or Kraft card look great
DK wool red is the most popular colour choice for this project
Ink pad
Acrylic letter stamps
Step 1
To start making your DIY Valentines Card cut and fold your card to make the blank card base to build your Valentine’s card on to. You could use a scouring tool to make a crisper fold line. I usually start with an A6 size card to ensure the card is not too large to try and fill. You can decide for yourself if you would prefer a landscape or portrait orientation on your card. This can be decided later though before the heart is stuck down. So you do not need to make that decision at the beginning.
Step 2
Using a 4km crochet hook, follow the pattern below to create you heart. It is not essential to use the exact hook size and wool thickness as this basic design can be achieved with alternatives.
Pattern
ch 5; join with sl st to form a loop.
Round 1:
ch 3. 10 dc and 1 sl st in first ch st.
Round 2:
ch 3; 3 trc in same st.
3 trc in next st.
1 dc, 1 hdc in next st.
1 sc in next 2 sts.
1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc in next st.
1 sc in next 2 sts.
1 hdc, 1 dc in next st.
3 trc in next st.
3 trc, 1 dc in next st.
sl st in first st.
Abbreviations:
sl st = slip stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
trc = treble crochet
st(s) = stitch(es)
If you are more of a visual person there are videos available on YouTube to guide you through creating your heart. http://www.youtube.com I would advise that you watch a video all the way through to give you a rough idea of the pattern. Then follow along doing the pattern at the same time, with several pauses to help you keep up.
Also if you are not able to crochet the same design could be achieved using this knitting pattern. If you aren’t comfortable working with will the same style of card could be created using a heart shape of felt or patterned fabric. If you want to get really creative you could create a red air dry clay heart and emboss it with patterns.
Step 3
Sew in the ends to neaten your heart. Gently press the heart so it sits flat ready to be stuck to the card.
Step 4
Now before you attach your heart to the card, you need to stamp the card with your sentiment, a simple Happy Valentine’s Day will be fine or use this opportunity to let your creativity run wild.
Step 5
Once the ink has dried you can attach the heart to the card, a strong glue will hold the heart on. I wouldn’t suggest using foam sticky pads as they don’t seem to properly adhere to the wool.
Your simple card is now complete, this basic design can be embellished upon. In addition the card design can be adapted to use for other occasions it is perfect for a basic anniversary card as well.
Let me know how you get on making this simple card, also I would love to see how you have adapted this design to make your own variations.
